Cloth Diapering 101: prefold diaper, Snappi fastener, Bummis Cover

This is a simple demonstration of how to change a cloth diaper. There are many confusing options out there for moms to sift through, but I prefer the simple and economical. Prefold diapers require a little bit of folding (this sounds intimidating, but really isn't). They are my diaper of choice after doing cloth diapers on 4 little bottoms - long lasting, quick-drying, and very good at catching everything that comes out! Cloth childhood Song: Which childhood should I choose?

Set to original lyrics written by me, a cloth-diapering mom, I compare and review 9 reusable cloth diapers including Fuzzi Bunz, Gro Via, Bummis, Thirsties, Bum Genius, Knicker Nappies, Whammies, Lil' Joey, Happy Heines, and others. The focus is on One-Size diapers, but prefolds, covers and all-in-ones are also included in the diaper music video. I intended this video to be a fun summary documenting my cloth-diapering journey with my daughter, who was born six weeks early, in February of 2010. Check out my Web-site at diapers.hannahwinkle.com for a more in-depth critique of the diapers and the song lyrics. My favorite diapers currently are the OS Bummis Easy Fit diaper. When Baby V was smaller, the one-size diapers were so big, they blocked her mobility. FuzzyBunz Smalls and Thirsties Duo Diaper Smalls were my favorites, because they worked well, were well made, and she could roll over in them. I'm also a fan of prefolds and diaper covers. I assign a grade to each diaper based on my experiences using them. I started documenting each OS diaper's successes and failures on my daughter at 12 lbs. If a diaper claims to fit an 8-pound baby, but leaked until my baby was 15 lbs, it will not get an A or B.

Cloth Diaper Covers - No More Rubber Pants!

!±8± Cloth Diaper Covers - No More Rubber Pants!

Cloth diaper covers have come out of the dark ages and they are cuter than ever. Today's cloth covers are so much easier to use than the old rubber or vinyl pants our parents or grandparents used. These days you can find cloth wraps with Velcro-like hook and loop tabs so they work just like a disposable diaper - without the cost or environmental damage. The new covers are also available in snaps or pull-on versions. Modern diaper covers are made with real knit or fleece fabrics, so they are soft and comfortable. No more crinkly diaper sounds!

Most modern covers can be grouped into two categories: pull-on covers or fastening covers. Pull-on covers go on like a pair of shorts. They have a stretchy waist and may use a drawstring or an elasticised waist for adjustability.

Fastening covers are also called wraps and they come in two basic styles as well: snaps or hook and loop tape. Most fastening diaper wraps fasten at the sides or in the front. Different people like different styles of diaper covers. There is no right or wrong diaper cover as long as it works for your child.

Synthetic fabrics are the most popular for diaper covers since they are easy to use, can be machine-washed, and are available in hundreds of prints and colors. One very common fabric used for diaper covers is polyurethane laminate (PUL). PUL covers are made by many companies including Thirsties and Bummis.

Of course, everything old is new again. Before rubber pants came wool soakers to keep babies dry. Soft wool covers are making a come-back since they are durable, breathable, biodegradable, and easy to use. Wool is a renewable resource and a properly cared for wool cover will last for many years. Many people think of wool as a delicate fabric, but wool is actually one of the most durable fibers around. Wool fibers can bend many thousands of times without breaking - making them stronger than the same thickness of steel.

Wool can also absorb 30% of it's own weight in moisture before feeling damp. Wool is also great any time of year. While most people think of wool as a winter fabric, it's breathability makes it perfect for hot or cold weather. Wool covers work best over a very absorbent diaper. You can find pull on style wool covers made from fabric or handknit or crocheted.

No matter which style of cloth diaper cover you choose, when you use cloth diapers you are making a great choice for your babies skin, for the environment and for your wallet.

Receiving absolute as a Cloth Diaper?

Clothing Diapering on a budget, or maybe your diaper pail is full and you are in need! Receiving blankets make excellent cloth diapers and with a few different fold styles, you can have absorbency where you need it, and trim where you need it. Okay, so 2 little helpers (age 10 and 14 months) and one handed filming, pretty filming it makes not! Sorry, but you get the idea. This is a simple carters receiving blanket used as a "flat" in a Bummis Super Whisper Wrap. My point, you can use nearly ANYTHING as a great fitting, trim, cloth diaper with a decent to mid-line cover. Make sure the fabric is 100% cotton and washable of course, and have fun!

Different Types of Cloth Diapers

!±8± Different Types of Cloth Diapers

So you're ready to take the plunge and explore the world of prefold cloth diapers for the good of Mother Nature and your budget. If you're just entering into this fascinating world for the first time, whether because you're used to plastic disposables or because you've never used diapers before, a little preparation in order. The cloth diaper industry has more depth to it than you might think, and it's easy to get confused about what you might need if you don't know the differences between diaper styles. Different types of cloth diapers will have different ups and downs, and you need to know enough to go with the ones that work optimally for your situation.

We should start with an explanation of flats, the traditional, classic cloth diaper option. They're a single layer of cotton gauze. As you can imagine, they're not exactly sophisticated, and their current availability is really mostly due to inertia from its past legacy as a predominant diaper type. Nowadays you can probably do better. Of course, if you're willing to do the extra work folding and pinning them, then you can buy these types of diapers very cheaply. They also dry quite fast.

Another kind of diaper that requires similar particularly focused care to use properly is the pocket diaper. They're defined primarily by consisting of two basic layers, an inner fleece layer and an outer layer, with an opening in the back. The back opening is intended to be stuffed with anything from diaper liners to hand towels, whatever you need to absorb the output. While the fleece does a good job keeping moisture away from infant skin, pocket diapers aren't the easiest diapers to use.

Moving on to the more popular options, prefolds and fitteds are all the rage with diapers nowadays. Fitted diapers incorporate elastic, and look very similar to disposables with the obvious caveat that they're not meant to be disposed of. Prefolded diapers more closely resemble flats, but with extra padding in the right places to help the diaper fit better and prevent leakage. There are also Chinese prefolded diapers which are notably more absorbent than the regular sorts you could find at the store.

Prefolds, besides being probably the most popular diaper type in the current environment, also have some additional variety worth noting. They can come in bleached or unbleached forms, for instance. There are claims that unbleached are softer, but you'll have to be the judge of that for yourself. While most prefolded diapers are made of cotton, there are some made of hemp that are pricier in return for more absorbency. Almost all brands of prefolds are fairly simple to store and dry, and are flexible enough to adapt to various body types, which is why prefolds are the diaper of choice today.

Now you know what's out there, and you know the benefits and downsides to each diaper type. You still have to be the one to decide what's best for your baby, though. No one can do that for you!
